Refrigerator coils: when and how to clean them
· By Fauquier DIY
Dusty condenser coils make a fridge work harder. A short how-to based on the Building America Solution Center and the Department of Energy.
A quick fall maintenance job: the coils on your fridge.
- The Building America Solution Center says to clean the condenser coils behind or below the refrigerator every 6 to 12 months.
- A vacuum is the preferred tool. Then wipe with a damp rag and let it air dry.
- Plan to finish within two hours so food doesn't spoil.
- The Department of Energy adds: read your owner's manual to learn how to safely clean the coils on older models.
⚠ Unplug it first
Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning the coils.
Your exact model's manual comes first. If you're not sure where your coils are, look it up before you start.
