Do I need a permit for this? Here's what Fauquier County's own website says. I'm not County staff, and this site is not affiliated with the County, so treat this as a starting point and confirm for your project.
Usually no permit
- Ordinary repairs usually don't need a permit. The County's examples: replacing toilets and sinks, electrical fixtures and switches, or electrical appliances, as long as they're not being moved and are similar to what's being replaced.
Permit needed
- You DO need a permit if the appliance or fixture is moving, or if it's a "fuel fired" appliance.
- Building permits cover things like additions, renovations, outbuildings, and some accessory structures such as tanks and retaining walls. Most work also needs a zoning permit.
- Sheds and similar structures generally need a permit unless they're single-story and under 256 sq. ft. Fences don't need a building permit, but zoning rules like setbacks still apply. Retaining walls holding back more than 3 feet of earth need permits.
