Appliance Buying Tips

How I compare two appliances (works for any brand)

· By Fauquier DIY

My brand-neutral checklist: fit, running cost, ENERGY STAR, size, features, warranty and reviews.

Here's how I compare two appliances. It works for any brand.

  1. Fit. Measure the space, the door swing, and room for ventilation (FTC).
  2. Running cost. Compare the yellow EnergyGuide labels. The yearly cost is an estimate, not a promise (FTC).
  3. ENERGY STAR. Does each model have it? It means the product meets EPA energy-efficiency guidelines (FTC).
  4. Size. For refrigerators, the Department of Energy says the larger the unit, the more energy it generally consumes.
  5. Features you'll actually use. That's my opinion, and yours may differ.
  6. Warranty. Read it on each maker's own website.
  7. Reviews. Read several sources, and search for the company or product name plus words like "review" or "complaint" (FTC).

The Department of Energy puts it well: every appliance has two price tags. What you pay to buy it, and what you pay for the energy and water it uses.

A blank worksheet

Model A Model B
Capacity
Estimated yearly energy cost (EnergyGuide label)
Estimated yearly kWh (EnergyGuide label)
ENERGY STAR?
Warranty (maker's page)

Fill it in from each model's spec sheet and label. I'll use this checklist on two real models in a future post.
